01. The Carving

The soft and compact limewood timber, without knots, is sculpted by the expert hands of the carvers who carefully reproduce the motifs and decorations of the original piece.

02. The preparation: Gesso Bole and Earths

The plaster wich is applied then onto the frame, is obtained by mixing a special chalk powder with natural animal glue. When the pastering is dry we apply the bole and the natural earths giving the most appropriate base colour to the frame before the gilding.

03. The Gilding

A very thin fine gold leaf is then applied onto the frame which we have previously treated with the bole and the earths. According to the old rules of the 15th century School, the frame is gently wet with water to create a perfect adhesion between the surface of the frame and the metal leaf.

04. The Polishing and the Finishing

Once the frame is gilded we polish it with agata stone: the gold grisp perfectly and it shows a shiny and brillant look. Only now the frame is ready to be finished with old patinas or shades which giving the aging splendour of the original masterpiece.
